It's true that marriages are made in heaven, but they have to be lived on earth. Marriages between stars of Bollywood happen when they are paired in several films, fall in love and tie the knot. Do they live happily ever after? Or do some of these break under the pressures of real life contrary to the synthetic fairytales they live out on screen? These marriages are forever treading on dangerous ground, as the partners have to suppress their gigantic star egos when they become husband and wife.
While a number of Bollywood marriages have ended up on the rocks, there have been quite a few marriages that have survived the test of time. Here we go down memory lane to unfold little known stories of starry love. Let's start with Sunil Dutt and Nargis, because their marriage is of the stuff that legendary love stories are made of.
Sunil Dutt and Nargis
The love story of Sunil Dutt and Nargis began at the sets of 1957 classic 'Mother India', where they starred as mother and son. While shooting for the film, Nargis was trapped amidst lit haystacks and Sunil ran through the fire and rescued her. This act resulted in love and subsequent marriage.
Unfortunately, they are no more in this world – Nargis died of Cancer many years ago and Sunil Dutt passed a couple of years back.
Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu
Interestingly, Naseem Banu, Saira's mother, who wanted to divert Saira's growing friendship with Rajendra Kumar, requested the thespian to talk to her daughter and help her see reason. But as destiny would have it, Dilip himself fell for the actress' innocent beauty and the rest, as they say, is history. The duo got married in 1966. Individually, the couple were successful in their careers but a series of films with Saira after marriage, like 'Gopi', 'Sagina' and 'Bairaag' did not have the magic of his earlier films with his now wife. Saira quit movies by choice for domestic bliss.
Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan
Together they did some memorable films, and gave some great performances in the 70s. In 1973, Amitabh Bachchan married Jaya Bhaduri, one of the most successful and accomplished actresses of that time. After marriage Amitabh achieved great heights in his career literally and figuratively. Although they acted together in few films, like 'Abhimaan', 'Sholay' and 'Chupke Chupke', she said goodbye to Bollywood and decided to focus on her family life. Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh
Gifted with golden toes and energy, they shared the symphony unlike any other young star pair. Truly, Rishi and Neetu were amongst the last in the dwindling breed of dream star pairs. Before marriage, they created magic in movie like 'Khel Khel Mein', 'Kabhi Kabhie', 'Rafoo Chakkar', etc, but after they married in 1979, things were different as Neetu, who was only 21 when she married, hung her boots much before her time had run out.
Ajay Devgan and Kajol
One of the most successful actresses of recent times, Kajol married Ajay Devgan after working in films like 'Ishq' and 'Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha' thereby falling in love. The duo, post marriage did 'Raju Chacha' which failed at the box office and now they coming together in their home production film 'U Me Aur Hum'.
Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna
They met and fell in love while they were doing 'International Khiladi' and 'Zulmi'. Twinkle Khanna quit acting after her marriage to pursue a career in interior decoration, even though dashing Akshay's career is scaling new heights after every film.
The latest to join the bandwagon is of course Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan. Successfully paired in reel life 'Guru', let's see how they handle their chemistry in real life. Only time will tell if their marriage is going to make. We wish the couple the very best of everything to come in life.
