Sooraj Barjatya's Movies

Maine Pyar KiyaWho can forget the magic created by Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit in Sooraj Barjatya's 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun'? With Madhuri back to Bollywood, Barjatya plans to recreate the same magic with the same pair, but he is yet to get a right script for the pairing. Sooraj Barjatya is a well-known filmmaker who is lauded for his pure family entertaining films. He is also known for his penchant for the name "Prem", which he bestows upon all his heroes. All his films have been produced under his family banner, Rajshri Productions Pvt. Ltd.

During the past six decades, Rajshri has explored and set new trends in the entertainment world. In 1947, Tarachand Barjatya (grandfather of Sooraj Barjatya) established Rajshri Pictures (P) Ltd., the film distribution division of Rajshri. Tarachand set philosophies of promoting good cinema, producing wholesome musical entertainers and introducing new talents in every sphere of filmmaking. Rajshri's success shows it has grown a lot from 'Dosti' (1964) to the most recent 'Vivaah' (2006).

Sooraj R Barjatya made his directorial debut in 1989 with 'Maine Pyar Kiya', starring Salman Khan, which was a huge box-office hit. This simplistic, teenage romance was the most successful film of its time with its magical, melodious portrayal of innocent first love. The film accrued 6 Filmfare awards.

Sooraj's MoviesSooraj's next offering, 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun' again with Salman Khan was a film that again managed to rewrite history for the second time in a row. Released in 1994, Hum Aapke Hain Koun captured the box office in mesmerizing fashion by being Indian Cinema's top grossing film of all time. This was the film that instilled a new lease of life in the ailing film industry by bringing viewers back to cinema halls. This was the first Hindi film to run in mainscreen cinemas in U.S.A., U.K. and other parts of the world and creating records unheard of, before. It won the prestigious national award from the President of India for being "The Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment". With this film Rajshri also gave a boost to film merchandising, which was till then at a nascent stage in India.

Sooraj R. Barjatya's next family drama 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' was the biggest grosser of 1999. His fourth film 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' starring Hrithik Roshan was the first film directed by him to fail at the box office. He bounced back with his latest film 'Vivaah' (2006) starring Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao, which proved one of the biggest blockbusters in his career since 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun'. The film starts with engagement and ends with marriage and gauges "the heights of love and the depths of relationship". It is a heart-warming tale of unconditional love...

VivaahUnlike his earlier films, 'Vivaah' is not so much about the celebrations surrounding a wedding, but more about the definitions and dynamics of a marriage. The filmmaker who produced such big romantic hits like 'Maine Pyar Kiya' and 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun' in the 90s has approached middle-age in a position to treat the man-woman relationship with a certain detachment.

As Sooraj himself expressed in an interview, "Once that engagement ring is exchanged, you suddenly become so important to someone else. I feel today's youngsters are losing touch with the beauty and relevance of such a relationship."

Let's wait and watch how Salman takes the new avatar of Prem once again with charming Madhuri in Sooraj Barjatya's next family entertainer.
