Complete Coverage Of Fanaa

Fanaa is a Bollywood movie released in 2006, starring Aamir Khan and KajolFanaa in pivotal roles. It is directed by Kunal Kohli who previously directed Hum Tum, and is produced under Yash Raj Films. The film also stars Rishi Kapoor, Kiron Kher, Tabu, and Shruti Seth.

The highly anticipated movie released on May 26th, ending Kajol's four year hiatus from the film industry. It also features her first time pairing with Aamir Khan. The two worked together in Ishq, but were not paired opposite each other. Aamir Khan plays the role of a tourist guide in Delhi while Kajol plays a Kashmiri girl. Rishi Kapoor and Kiron Kher play the role of Kajol's parents.

Synopsis

Zooni Ali Beg (Kajol) is a blind Kashmiri girl who travels without her parents for the first time, with a dance troupe of which she is part. On her journey, she meets Rehan Khan (Aamir Khan), a casanova and tour guide. Although her friends warn Zooni about him, she still wants to experience the feeling of being in love for the first time, and spends time with him. In New Delhi, Rehan shows her the city and starts to develop feelings for her -- but he also keeps a very dark secret from her.

Zooni and Rehan decide to get married. Her mother Nafisa (Kiron Kher) and father Zulfikar Ali Beg (Rishi Kapoor) acquiesce to the marriage, and come in from Kashmir for the wedding. Meanwhile, the young couple visit an ophthalmologist, who advises Zooni that her blindness may be surgically curable, though the operation has its risks. They decide to take the chance. Zooni asks Rehan to visit the Rashtrapati Bhawan (president's residence) to invite their friend Jolly Good Singh (Jaspal Bhatti) to the wedding. He doesn't respond much to what Zooni is saying, but she understands that he will do as she asks him to.

While still recovering from the successful surgery - and before she can see Rehan -- Zooni is told that Rehan has been killed in a terrorist bomb attack on Rashtrapati Bhawan. But the truth is not always what it seems like...

While critics claim that the plot is taken from the Hollywood movie Eye of the Needle, it doesn't seem to have many similarities. after the bombing, zooni goes through a series of events and finds out that rehan is alive. she kills him because she finds out that he is a terrorist ( a sad ending to the movie)

Filming Locations

The film was originally envisaged to be shot in Kashmir before the lead heroine backed out due to the continuing insurgency in that region. The director chose to move the Kashmir spell to Poland. Among several other locations it is being shot in certain historical locations in Delhi including the Red Fort, Jantar Mantar, Qutub Minar, Purana Qila and Lodhi Gardens.

Controversy

While promoting his film in Gujarat made some comments regarding the Gujarat chief ministers handling of the Sardar Sarovar Dam and the rehabilitation of displaced villagers.[citation needed] These comments back fired with threats from the youth wing of the BJP (state governing party) to burn down any multiplex that screens the film.[citation needed] Since then several multiplex had stated they cannot provide security to customers. And while these threats exist, most theatre owners in Gujarat have refused to screen the movie.[citation needed] But as the movie neared it release, multiplexes across the country has agreed to screen the movie. And Fanaa finally comes to multiplexes with unprecedented advance booking.

Trivia
  • Director Kunal Kohli sent Aamir Khan and Kajol a draft of the script, hoping they would agree with each other. His plan backfired - each of them sent back their revised versions of the script, with their own little adjustments, which included more depth and flesh to their own characters and less to the others.
  • Aamir Khan has sported a new youngish look for this movie, quite a contrast to his moustache-twirling antics in The Rising. Kajol, apparently, has also lost a significant amount of weight.
  • The title Fanaa means annihilation in Sufism, a mystic tradition of Islam. It also means destruction or destroyed in love in Urdu|Hindi. In Urdu/Hindi, it can convey the meaning of totally lost in love, or completely encapsulated by love.
  • While promoting his film in Gujarat, Aamir Khan made critical comments regarding the Gujarat chief minister's handling of the Sardar Sarovar Dam and called for the proper rehabilitation of displaced villagers. These comments were greeted by threats from the youth wing of the BJP (state governing party) to burn down any multiplex that screens the film. Since then several multiplexes have stated they cannot provide security to customers while these threats exist and have refused to screen the movie Fanaa.
