Bollywood is commonly referred to as Hindi cinema, even though Hindustani, the substratum common to both Hindi and Urdu, might be more accurate. Bollywood consists of the languages of Hindi, Urdu and English. The use of poetic Urdu words is fairly common. The connection between Hindi, Urdu, and Hindustani is an extremely contentious matter.
There has been a growing presence of Indian English in dialogue and songs as well. It is not uncommon to see films that feature dialogue with English words and phrases, even whole sentences. There are a growing number of English films. A few films are also made in two or even three languages (either using subtitles, or several soundtracks). Desi filmmakers have never shies away from employing videshi epithet for their movies. Like Paying Guest, CID, Guide, Gambler, the Great Gambler, and Jewel Thief, to name a few.
Romantic films too have made turned to English for inspiration and hence extensive use of the word 'love' in films like Love, Love, Love, Love in Tokyo/Shimla/Nepal, Love Marriage, I Love You, Love 86, Love At Times Square and the forthcoming Priyanka Chopra starrer which introduces Harman Baweja in Love Story 2050.
There are quite a few releases with English titles lined up like My Name is Anthony Gonsalves and The Last Lear.
The Last Lear
The Last Lear is a forthcoming Indian, English language film directed by acclaimed director Rituparno Ghosh. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Arjun Rampal, Divya Dutta, Shefali Shah and Jisshu Sengupta.
My Name is Anthony Gonsalves
My Name is Anthony Gonsalves is a popular comic song from the 1977 Bollywood film Amar Akbar Anthony. One unusual feature of this song is that the actor featured in its picturization, Amitabh Bachchan, provides vocals along with the playback singer Kishore Kumar. Amitabh speaks and Kishore Kumar sings. My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves (2008) is also the name of a Bollywood film currently in production.
Partner
Govinda, Salman Khan, Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif.
David Dhawan's version of Will Smith's Hitch has set the cash registers ringing, thanks to Chi Chi and Salman's rocking chemistry.
Also Katrina Kaif must be one happy woman. After Namastey London and Apne, Partner is another feather in her designer cap.
Shootout at Lokhandwala
Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Vivek Oberoi, Tusshar Kapoor, Arbaaz Khan, Sunil Shetty, Amrita Singh, Neha Dhupia and Dia Mirza. Based on the 1991 real-life shootout episode in Suburban Mumbai, Apoorva Lakhia's multi-starrer was a runaway success. More than anything it gave Vivek Oberoi a much-needed hit.
Gangster
Reportedly inspired by the real life story of Abu Salem and starlet Monica Bedi, Anurag Basu's Gangster was one well-made film. Shot extensively in Seoul, South Korea, its finely tuned performances and keen direction, coupled with Pritam's melodious ditties made Gangster a winner with critics and audiences alike.
Don the Chase Begins Again
Nailing Don, for most of its running time. Farhan Akhtar's tribute to the 1978 AB starrer with a terrific climatic twist evoked mixed responses. But the timeless dialogues like Don KO pakadna mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai, still continue to excite. Buzz is Akhtar's planning a sequel. Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Rampal and, Isha Kopikkar.
Bluffmaster
Bluffmaster is the story of a suave conman (Abhishek Bachchan) who prides himself on being able to cheat anyone and anything, is pushed into a corner from where there is no exit.
This movie tends to completely bluff you and in unimaginable ways. Rohan Sippy's Bluffmaster was named after the Manmohan Desai con caper starring Shammi Kapoor and Saira Banu. The 2005 movie was smart and sleek lending Bachchan Jr an additional boost after hits like Bunty Aur Babli and Dus.
My Wife's Murder
American crime fiction writer James M. Cain has inspired generations in Hollywood and Bollywood to come up with their take on crime stories. Anil Kapoor, Nandana Sen, Suchitra, Krishnamurthy, Boman Irani, Rajesh Tandon, Abhijit Lahiri. A concept like My Wife's Murder is alien for Bollywood since it tends to explore the mind of a simpleton who accidentally murders his nagging wife. However, the film was made in Telugu earlier as Madhyanam Hatya (Chakravarthy, Amani).
Murder
Inspired by a Hollywood flick "Unfaithful", Murder has complete ingredients to suite the requirements of the cinegoers who come to cinema halls for the purpose of entertainment and quality stuff only. The movie features plenty of skin-show, sex scenes and has an impressive storyline. It gives full value to the money spent on purchasing tickets. Malika Sherawat, Ashmit Patel, Emraan Hashmi, Uday Tikekar, Raj Zutshi, Sheeba Chaddha.
My Brother... Nikhil
AIDS. The stigma and reservations associated with the dreaded disease were sensitively highlighted in Onir's critically acclaimed debut. My Brother... Nikhil also allowed Juhi to break out from the chirpy mould and emerge as an actress of restraint and substance.
Yes Boss
Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, Aditya Pancholi. He loves her. She loves him. Both want to get rich too. So they butter up the 'boss' in their own not-so-nice way. Meanwhile, the boss has his own plans. Aziz Mirza's endearing romantic comedy is one flick the DVD player never gets enough of.
Soldier
Bobby Deol and Preity Zinta. Preity pairs with her good friend Bobby in this film after a very long gap since ‘Soldier’. Revenge and romance mark the key ingredients of this typical Abbas-Mustan masala potboiler. Shot predominantly in Sydney, Australia, Soldier not only made profit but also brought the Jhoom Barabar Jhoom pair together on screen for the first time.
Hello Brother
Both khan brothers in this movie.Salman Khan, Rani Mukerji and Arbaaz Khan. Directed by Sohail Khan, this one had all the Khan Brothers pitching in. Though the comedy bombed, it was fun to watch Sallu play a ghost to hilarious effect. Guess who portrayed God? Why the Big B of course!
Interestingly, he'll be playing the almighty again in God Tussi Great Ho, a remake of Jim Carrey's Bruce Almighty which also stars Salman.
1942 A Love Story
A look at her track record shows you that despite a few forgettable films, Manisha has still given some good performances Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 1942 - A Love Story. Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Manisha Koirala and Anupam Kher. With R D Burman's soulful soundtrack, inspired performances and stunning photography, Vidhu Vinod Chopra's lavishly scaled romance against the backdrop of Quit India Movement made quite a picture. Alas, the effect was lost on the audience who prefer to groove to Mohra's Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast, which was released.
