Gone are the days when married heroines were made unfit to be a part of the Bollywood industry. Today, married heroines like Juhi Chawla, Kajol, and Madhuri Dixit have made successful comebacks in the industry as heroines. This year, gorgeous Sridevi has also added herself to the list of comeback heroines with her special appearance in Rajkumar Santoshi’s ‘Halla Bol’.
Earlier, in the view of cinegoers, heroine of Bollywood was a dream girl who epitomizes all the ideas, emotions and aesthetics on the screen. She was the personified form of their sense of beauty, emotional integrity and centre of their attention. As such, the film buffs were supposed to develop some sort of possessiveness and sense of belongingness towards the onscreen images of the heroines unconsciously. Now it was natural for them to lose the sense of possessiveness towards the heroine when she got married. That was the reason that the great heroines of yesteryears have disappeared after their marriages. Nargis, Saira Banu, Babita, Neetu Singh, Tina Munim are to name a few who totally said a farewell to Bollywood after their marriages. Even Twinkle Khanna followed them after getting married with Akshay Kumar.
Apart from the audience, Bollywood had too never been very kind to comeback heroines. A heroine after her marriage when she again wanted to dazzle the screen got the role of a mother or a sister or any other character role. Jaya Bachchan, Rakhee Gulzar, Hema Malini, Helen, Shabana Azmi and Rekha had to transform themselves according to the roles they got to do. Only Dimple Kapadia was the exception, who successfully recontinued her film career after ten years. After doing Raj Kapoor's super duper hit ‘Bobby’ she got married to Rajesh Khanna and due to some differences between them she returned in the Bollywood with films like ‘Saagar’, ‘Aitbaar’ and ‘‘Ram Lakhan’’ as a heroine.
Now, the viewers’ perception towards the on-screen idols has been radically changed. The increased literacy rates, exposure to the global affairs, knowledge they are getting through the satellite channels, press and media have changed the attitude of the masses towards cinema in general and to the heroines in particular.
This positive shift is resulted in appreciating the performances by leaving the personal affairs of the heroines including their marriages aside. Of course, the private events of the celebrities are always have an ear to hear but demarcating the public onscreen image with their respective personal happenings is one of the good signs which ultimately led to continue the careers of the heroines irrespective of their marriages. Juhi Chawla, Kajol and Madhuri Dixit have already succeeded in encashing this attitudinal change of the new-age audience. Moreover, their reappearance on the screen after a gap also became a publicity stunt in the name of their comeback in pulling the audience towards the cinema halls.
At present, Kajol is acting in various projects like ‘U Me Aur Hum' movie and Rajkumar Santoshi’s ‘Ramayan’ with her real-life partner Ajay Devgan. Madhuri Dixit returned to the screen with her ‘Aaja Nachle’ after a gap of five years. Although the film was flop, the ‘dhak dhak’ girl is among many film offers. The original queen of Bollywood Sridevi has been seen in a special appearance in ‘Halla Bol’ after long ten years and two daughters. Besides, she's doing a prominent role in hubby Boney Kapoor's next production. Raveena Tandon is also planning to act in a couple of films as heroine, while Karishma Kapoor is also on the discussions now.
So, how far these demure damsels will woo the audience is the question of the hour. How many of them get the approval and acceptance from the viewers as earlier will be decided by the time. Until then, wait and watch folks!
