Bollywood Movies
Bollywood will not forget 2007 very easily as its most known faces spent more time and energy in dealing with controversies surrounding them than in film studios. On the cinematic front, while 2007 was a good year for small budget films, big budget films, except Shah Rukh Khan's ‘Om Shanti Om’, performed poorly.
However in the middle of the year, it witnessed a path-breaking blockbuster ‘Chak De India’ and then a couple of super hits – ‘Om Shanti Om’ and ‘Jab We Met’. Known for churning out hits every year, Yash Raj Productions’ only successful film this year was ‘Chak De India’. The year 2007 particularly belongs to comic flicks such as ‘Partner’, ‘Namaste London’, ‘Bhagam Bhag’, ‘Heyy Baby’, ‘Bheja Fry’, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’, ‘Dhol’, and ‘Dhamaal’. The year, however, was excellent for Akshay Kumar, who gave four consecutive hits – ‘Namaste London’, ‘Bhagam Bhag’, ‘Heyy Baby’ and ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ – all comedies. His last movie, ‘Welcome’, released towards the end of the year, is also a comedy film.
The year 2007 also showcased some critically acclaimed films like ‘Gandhi My Father’, ‘Water’, ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’, ‘Awaarapan’, ‘The Namesake’ and ‘Life In a Metro’. Finally, the year-end saw Aamir Khan's directorial debut ‘Taare Zameen Par’ which proved one of the best films of this year.
Chhote Sarkar Marries the Queen of Hearts
One of the most beautiful women in the world Aishwarya Rai got married to the most eligible bachelor of Bollywood Abhishek Bachchan. Media went paranoid, tried to cover each and every proceeding of the strictly ‘private’ affair. Later, some snaps of the fairy-tale wedding were thrown for public consumption.
Rani-Aditya Love Affairs
It was heard that there was going something very romantic between Rani Mukherji and Aditya Chopra when they were in New York with connection to the film ‘Tara Rum Pum’. Says a source from New York that they spent three days together at the Radisson Hotel in New York.
Actors Turn Farmers
This year we have also seen some of our big stars like the veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan having to prove that he is a farmer. It seems pretty ironical and really very hilarious that one of the top most stars in Bollywood has to prove that he is now a registered farmer. A court in Uttar Pradesh in June ruled that Amitabh Bachchan was not a farmer and struck down the allotment of farmland to him in Barabanki. Bachchan had to give up the claim for land to come out of the case and escape from paying a hefty fine. After Bachchan, it was Aamir Khan turn to come under scanner for purchasing agricultural land in Pune district by allegedly claiming he was a farmer.
Prison Sentences
Law also caught up with actors Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan for their past crimes. Arrest of both the stars created a flutter in the film industry as almost Rs 100 crore was reportedly riding on each of them.
Salman was accused of poaching a chinkara on the outskirts of Jodhpur near Mathania on the night of September 27, 1998, while shooting for his film ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’. This year, he was sentenced to prison and was whisked away to serve his sentence in a Jodhpur jail. Finally, Salman was given bail by the Rajasthan High Court against a bond of Rs.100, 000 and two sureties of Rs.50, 000 each. The special TADA court announced its verdict on the country’s longest trial over terrorist activities, Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to six years in prison and a fine of Rs. 25,000. Sanjay Dutt was immediately taken into custody and taken to Pune’s high security Yerwada jail. The goodwill and public sympathy didn’t stop Sanjay Dutt from going to jail a couple of times this year. But, later the Supreme Court grants him bail.
Jab Kareena & Shahid Split
Initially, everyone thought it was just a cheap promotional stunt for their upcoming film ‘Jab We Met’. But ‘truth became stranger than fiction’ when ‘Jab We Met’ story turned into ‘Jab We Split’ saga. The headstrong Kareena Kapoor and lover boy Shahid Kapoor broke off their over four-year long relationship. Bebo flaunted her new-found boyfriend (Saif Ali Khan) and Shahid maintained a resolute silence briefly saying that ‘the split hurts’. Ironically, their real-life love story failed but reel-life ‘Jab We Met’ did wonders at the box-office.
Aamir’s Personal Battle
Aamir Khan was seen fighting a personal battle in the court for custody of his brother Faisal Khan. Suffering from schizophrenia, Faisal had alleged that Aamir had ill-treated him.
